Under the City Lights

A city slumbers tonight. The houses in it lie dark, excepting the beacon of porch lights left on to welcome home a late traveler or to illuminate any prowler.

Inside one home…

A cat slumbers downstairs in a heated bed. No discomfort will be allowed; confident is she that her nightly slumber will be followed by her morning breakfast.

A dog slumbers at the foot of his master’s bed. In his dreams he catches frisbees with no end in sight.

A father slumbers nearby, the steady rumble of his snores filling the room. He catches his sleep before it is cut short.

An ailing baby slumbers in his mother’s arms, head as heavy as his eyelids. She sits up, valuing his rest over hers, and wonders when this cold will break as she watches the moon traverse the sky over the city lights.
